For us women, it is normal that every month we menstruation, although it is not something we hope forward, whereas, some more than others, suffer from headaches, menstrual cramps, and especially fluctuations in the state of spirit. This bleeding is an important sign of health because it tells us that our body is preparing for pregnancy. But what happens when suddenly fails us? Why change your life? What are the causes? What should I do?
These are just some of the questions we ask who have suffered irregular menstruation. However, the answers to them begin to know that menstruation is the cycle by which the egg is not fertilized by a sperm, decomposes along with the lining of the uterus, leaving the body in the form of bleeding, and repeated on average every 28 days, although it is normal to last between 24 and 34 days.
However, when these lapses are fickle and unpredictable, we can say that there is an irregular menstruation, which can be associated to various causes such as pregnancy, breastfeeding, hormonal disorders, excessive exercise or changes in routine, increases and significant weight loss, stress, anxiety or emotional problems, changes in birth control pills or drug use, the use of intrauterine device, or poor nutrition eating disorders, steroid use, travel, drugs, alcohol and caffeine.
Nevertheless, the irregularity of the period may also due to less common causes, which can be caused by other health problems: problems with the ovaries or polycystic ovary syndrome, diabetes, surgery, chemotherapy, excess hormone prolactin in the blood, uterine cancer, noncancerous tumors in the uterus, uterine infection level, thickening of the walls of the uterus, liver problems; as well as problems and pregnancy complications such as abortions, ectopic pregnancy, previous placenta and preeclampsia.
Although we know the causes, and we know that most of the irregular periods are benign, we recommend some changes in your lifestyle, which surely will help you overcome these jumps in the period: Avoid excessive exercise, try to have a balanced diet, learn to relax, drink plenty of fluids, do not change your birth control pills unless directed by your gynecologist, do not take sleeping pills, try to change their habits when it comes to sleep, do not drink too much alcohol, do drugs, consume less caffeine products, keep track of their menstrual periods to help you identify any change, and replace steroid-based drugs which are generally used for headaches and menstrual cramps, for medicines out without steroids to treat them.
If applying these measures, continues skipping a period, it is best visit your gynecologist to make a full check-up, since he is in the best position to recognize any specific causes of their condition, and therefore the most qualified to recommend the best treatment.
