Unforgettable! Cold, lights, glimmers and colors are the leading role this Christmas in New York. This East Coast city holds the idea of leading the most wonderful December party in the world. New York’s huge streets are filled with decoration which narrate stories and plunge you into a dream world.

New York is the second most populated city in USA and it’s formed by 5 counties: Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island. All neighborhoods decorate their houses with funny shapes and countless Christmas lights which soak the ambience in celebration. The party officially started 22 years ago, with the lightning of the huge Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree.

The 2008 Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree came from Hamilton, New Jersey. The '08 Tree was donated by the Varanyak family. Tree Facts from the 2008 Tree Facts Postcard (photo by Bart Barlow): Norway Spruce. 72 feet tall, 40 feet wide. Approximately 82 years old. Weight- approximately 16,000 pounds. 30,000 LED lights. (This was the second year that LED bulbs were used on the Tree). A portion of the electrical energy used to light the Tree came from a new installation of photovoltaic panels installed in 2007 on the roof of 45 Rockefeller Plaza. The Tree was topped with a crystal star designed by Swarovski. The 550 pound star is 9 feet in diameter and 1.5 feet deep. It is decorated with 25,000 crystals, with one million facets. The Tree was lighted on December 3, 2008. The Tree's last day on Rockefeller Plaza was January 9, 2009.

This gathering happens the first days of December, in 2015 the tree was decorated with a Swarovski crown star and around 45.000 LED colored lights. Large families, youth and tourists clap and are filled with the city’s energy. The multicultural city joins for the countdown and living the experience of ice skating in one of the attractions most starred in movies: the Rockefeller Center Ice Skating Rink.

For Christmas Shopping, citizens and tourists wander the Union Square, where one of the most varied markets settles. Other places also offer good Christmas choices, the Winter Village in Bryant Park among them, an out in the open market; and the Grand Central Holiday Fair, at the Grand Central Station.

But, just walking through the streets in Christmas will fill you with joy watching the stores’ exhibitions and the big store chains’ offers. You’ll even have to wait for a chance to marvel at the live shows. Go through the entire 5th Avenue and around its streets look for the window displays at Barney’s, Bloomingdale’s, BergdorfGoodman, Tiffany & Co and the busiest: Macy’s. In this last one, they build an elf display in one of the toy factories and they represent the North Pole; there the children can drop their letters to Santa and at the end of the attraction, sit on the legs of Santa himself. Unforgettable!!

You can’t leave town without visiting the Statue of Liberty in New York, take into account that on December 24th this monument remains closed to the public. The tour starts by ferry to “Liberty Island” in which you’ll find the Statue of Liberty, representative of USA’s democracy. You can walk up to the pedestal, 215 steps, or to the crown, which are 354 steps. Later, the ship will sail back to “Ellis Island”, and then back again to Manhattan.

On December 31st the party moves to the Times Square, where people wait hours for the ball to drop on New Year’s! This gathering includes many famous artists’ shows and endless fireworks that light up the dark sky of one of the most magical cities.
