Going on vacation or spending the weekend away while having a pet at home is one of the most common concerns for all those people who love their pets. Going away for a while and not knowing what will happen to them, represents a real stress. That is why, before making any decision, you must think about a series of aspects that will guarantee a pleasant trip.
One of the important points to analyze is the destination to visit, since it must be appropriate both for you and for your pets. In that sense, it is necessary to learn about the different lodges that are pet friendly. Another relevant aspect, which you should take into consideration, is the type of transport you will use to travel and thus know its requirements. You must define if you are traveling by plane, by car or by bus, in order to organize the perfect trip.
If you decide to travel by plane, check the rules of the airline and get as much information as possible, to avoid surprises. Remember that you must present your pet’s health certificate a few days before your trip. If you choose to travel by boat or train, also ask about the requirements of both national and international trips, since both are different. You must have all the documentation of your pet in order.
As for lodging, nowadays, there are many pet friendly hotels, hostels, and campsites. Try to choose one that is comfortable for the whole family, including your inseparable friend. If you are staying in a hotel, try to let your pet spend as little time as possible in the room alone, as it can stress and disturb neighbors or cause some sort of damage.
The most advisable thing is that you take a long walk around the place where you are staying, so that your pet familiarizes with the surroundings and doesn’t feel it as a strange place.
Do not be surprised if you have to prepare a luggage exclusively for your pet, which should include: leash, harness, favorite toys, food, treats, food and drink containers, medication and prescriptions (if applicable), waste bags, pillow or whatever your pet uses to sleep, sandbox, a first aid kit and everything you consider necessary, so that your best friend feels at home.
Remember, put a tag with your identification and your mobile number on the collar, so that, in case your pet gets lost, someone can quickly locate you.
Many times we wonder if we should give our pet some sort of sedative to calm his anxiety, but it is advisable not to do so. However, if you consider that there is no other option, you should consult your veterinarian. Do not self-medicate pets.
Traveling with your pet can be a pleasant and unforgettable experience, just make sure you plan your trip well so that there is no surprises. Remain calm at all times and your pet will feel your peace of mind. Enjoy your trip!
