Jade, stone hard composition is and has been of great importance in the eastern Mesoamerican cultures. The Maya, located in a large part of Guatemalan territory, was the second civilization that extracted jade stone in large quantities.

Jade, in this ancient society was multifunctional. The stone had a tough surface and therefore the Aborigines used to make weapons. Not only was strong, also it attracts good luck and protection from the afterlife with the use of amulets. The Maya believed that this stone was used to send messages to anyone who was present on the other side; this means outside the earthly limits.

Eating utensils also were made with jade as the main material, with the intention that its powers pass to the food. During the rituals of worship, villagers wear masks and jade necklaces. The internal energy of the body was transmitted to the universe through these talismans.

In funeral ceremonies, the stone was placed under the tongue of the deceased, it was a symbol of protection in the afterlife. Its spiritual value in these activities was essential to create a connection of body and soul, which would allow the person to travel in peace.

Among the main points of concentration of this stone in Guatemala are the Motagua and Polochic rivers, both caudal are important aspects of the Caribbean Sea. Izabal Lake, also known as sweet Gulf, located in the region of the most important Lake in the country’s another deposit, like the Chixoy River. The three mountain ranges: Sierra de las Minas, to the southeast; Sierra de Chuacús, located in the central highlands; and Sierra de los Cuchumatanes, located to the west, are sites where you can find ore.

In this region a wide variety of jade stone colors are found, each with different properties and powers as well as specific functions. The black jade used by Mayans to practice magic, making an appearance in the various ceremonies of this kind. White, representing purity, focus internal energy and it was used for information disclosure; also beauty and friendship cover this color.

Green symbolizes nature present in the environment, planting areas, wildlife; natural charms in general. The tone bright green was the image of the aristocracy, being used by the leaders of the tribe. The green stone with black paint was used as an amulet for good luck.

The chiefs of these cultures covered their body with accessories, but the material of these garments was jade: anklets, necklaces, bracelets, among others.
