The Macrobiotic Diet is based on the Chinese philosophy of the “Yin” and “Yang”, that is, two opposites that complement each other to achieve balance. The “Yang” Food are those such as whole grains, beans, fish, shellfish, eggs, meat, root vegetables, legumes, salt, among others; while the “Yin” Food are sugar, dairy, citrus and tropical fruits, vegetables such as eggplant, beets, potatoes, alcohol, coffee, spices, tofu, soft drinks, and many more; with that the combination the “Yin-Yang” style is the answer to the most favorable balance on our health.
The distribution of food is very important in this lifestyle, so our plate should be divided into the follow: 50% to 60%, it should consist of grains such as brown rice, millet, “cous -cous “, rye, wheat and other whole grains; breads and pastas may be included in this list, but should not be consumed frequently. 25% or 30% will be vegetables like carrots, preferably boiled or steamed; and 10% or 15% of vegetable soup, seaweed, and miso, you may include fish. They should be consumed twice a day, as it encourages the stomach.
To carry out this diet, there are some recommendations to follow: Do not consume salt, but if necessary, it should not be refined; so it is often used sea salt. You cannot eat canned or sausage products; although refined sugar is allowed, consumption should be minimal; food must be of organic origin, discarding anything that has undergone some processing or pesticides.
Like everything in life, the Macrobiotic Diet has advantages and disadvantages that make it worthy of its supporters or detractors, therefore, to its credit you obtain a considerable increase in energy, improves mental, emotional and spiritual stability; promotes bowel function, it helps weight loss, among others. On the other hand, among its cons is the deficit of protein from meat, there is muscle loss, lack of iron and calcium, and in some cases it can cause malnutrition.
