Belize, a Central American country the capital is Belmopan, is the residence of several ruins belonging to the culture. This civilization was one of the most entrepreneurial and extremely knowledgeable about the benefits of jade. The territory borders with Mexico and Guatemala; it is the second largest supplier of the mineral in the region. At least three quarters of the activities revolve around the exploitation of this crystal.
Jade crafts were important for these villagers who became experts in the art of carving in the rock. Its composition was high consistency, therefore, to carry out the activity, they should use harder stones, such as diamonds.
In Mayan society, the chief wear jade items, using accessories like necklaces, masks, bracelets, amulets, among others; one of their greatest privileges was the use of dental inlays, which, they said, had the power to command respect in speaking and persuading all who hear.
Even jade was used for making weapons; and besides being durable material, it was considered an amulet that attract protection and good luck.
From a religious and spiritual view, the Maya believed to have a connection with the world of the gods and the bridge by which this was possible was jade. At the time of ceremonies and praise, the villagers made use of masks and figures in the form of gods, carved in jade stones.
It was also used in the tools developed for food consumption so that the powers of this gem would communicate to the food, in this way they replenish the Mayan spiritual force of each member.
In health, jade was the carrier of abundant healing benefits. They were activated with the internal energy; the Mayans used it to reduce kidney problems, circulatory disorders, increase regeneration of the skin and calm the bone ailments. This stone, too, was a healer of the soul, was used to calm emotional crisis, mental relaxation and offered help to maintain internal balance.
Among the Mayan ruins in Belize is present the Altun Ha, is a small shopping center, known for the wealth found inside; It consists of two squares, surrounded by fourteen constructions.
In one of these temples, is located the “Green Tomb”; in this was found about three hundred objects of jade, all in near optimal conditions. In this hidden treasure was found one of the heaviest pieces of jade Mayan territory, weighted about 5 kilos.
The inhabitants of this territory were regarded as the dominant community among different indigenous groups, as having reached almost one million inhabitants; their architecture and jade findings speak of their history, leaving out the importance of the different parts that integrated their culture and different religious activities.
What a beautiful description of ancient history. Now, when I travel to Belize I’ll see it with different eyes and i’ll be looking for this natural gemstone formations.
