This particular syndrome is caused by the misuse of the cell phone, and has been popularized for about fifteen years due to the way we use mobile devices, equipment of which we are increasingly dependent. The use of these devices all the time, most of the time incorrectly, affects health and can cause injuries in the body.
According to DMedicina magazine, this is not an isolated problem and the figures for this syndrome increase every day. According to experts, the origin of text neck syndrome is the adoption of inappropriate postures that cause pain in 50% of people who spend more than two hours a day communicating through a mobile device.
Specialists clarify that the text neck syndrome is not only caused by talking on the phone, since sending text messages through messaging services or simply surfing the web from your mobile device or PC can cause an increase in pains of back and neck as well.
On the other hand, the weight of the head changes considerably depending on the position you are in. You should consider that if you maintain an upright posture, the head weighs between 4.5 and 5.5 kg, however a 15 degree inclination increases its weight up to 12.5 kg and an inclination of 60 degrees, gives it a resistance of 37, 2 kg, according to a study published by surgeon Kenneth Hasnraj.
That is why an inappropriate posture when using the telephone or any other device can alter the original curvature of the spinal column of the body, which can make it impossible to correct it.
Between the repercussions of the inappropriate use of mobile devices or computers are strong pains caused by prolonged muscle tension and the appearance of herniated discs or compression of the nerves of the spine.
It can also cause respiratory dysfunction caused by chronic pain that patients experience in the neck area or loss of vital capacity of the lungs by up to 30%, affecting breathing, with the possibility of causing heart or arterial disease.
On the other hand, the posture of the head inclined forward affects the natural line of the spine causing misalignment of the spine and the deformation of the natural curve of the neck, which can lead to premature arthritis.
Nevertheless, it is possible to avoid this type of injuries when using mobile equipment or computers. In principle, try to look at your devices with your head up and avoid tilting your head for a long time. Remember that prevention is the key to avoiding this type of syndromes.
Therefore it is advisable to keep the devices at eye level, use voice recognition and prefer to make a call before reading and writing endless messages. It is also recommended that you take regular breaks, alternate the position when writing your messages and keep your column in a neutral position.
