Gemstones often involve a story, but this is not the case of diamond called “Sun Drop”. A stunning gem which has broken more than one record and exceeded many expectations. It was auctioned by Sotheby’s with other pieces of great appeal, in 2011.
Many jewels of this type were discovered years ago and they have passed through several owners, like kings and queens around the world and even mine looters. However, the situation of this stone is different; it was discovered in 2010 by the mining company Cora International, in one of the excavations undertaken in South Africa.
Its name owes to the shocking degree of yellow that has which is considered the most pure and intense tonality of that color in the world. This feature reveals its age on earth, because this shade is achieved when the stone has mixed in its composition nitrogen particles encapsulated and carbon molecules, which will solidify over time, in other words, this diamond has million year history.
In addition, it is also one of the largest and strangest gem found to date, weighing 110.3 carats; shaped like a drop in the city of New York, United States. The astonishment caused by so admirable piece was so high that during the first months was shown to the public at the Museum of Natural History, residing in London.
For 2011 it was purchased by the renowned auction house Sotheby’s, located in Geneva, city belonging to Switzerland. The director at the time, Daves Bennet, estimated its value was ranged between eleven and fifteen million dollars.
On November 17th during the same year, was the day scheduled for this business to sale various items of tremendous value, including stressed the Sun Drop Diamond and a set of imperial accesories. This group was composed of a necklace and a brooch, and a pair of earrings.
