At least 14 deaths and 17 wounded left after a mass shooting with assault rifles in a facility for disabled people west of United States, in the city of San Francisco. A short while after, two suspects died after a confrontation with the police.
The shooting was at the facilities of the Inland Regional Center, an organization that Works with disabled people. After the shooting, two suspects, a heavily armed man and woman, were executed after facing the police force.
They were identified as Syed Rizwan Farook, 28 years old, and Tashfeen Malik, 27, according to the Chief of Police in San Bernardino, Jarrod Burguan, who pointed out both of them were in a relationship.
Farook’s brother in law, Farhan Khan, in his press statement said: “I have no clue why he would do something like this. I have no idea. I’m in shock…”. Khan mentioned that the last time he spoke to this brother in law was over two weeks ago.
A third person is in custody, but authorities have not yet determined any link to the case. So far, none of the 14 fatal victims has been identified. At first it was reported that the suspects were three, but later the authorities confirmed it had been only two that were executed by the police in the streets of the town.
The individuals responsible for the death of 14 people were armed with semi-auto AR-15 rifles and wore tactical suits; after firing at the workers, they stormed out the place aboard a vehicle in which they carried homemade bombs, which they used against the police during the chase.
In the meantime, the motives that drove the two gunmen to charge against those in the care center have not been cleared. Initially, the authorities thought it was a “terrorist attack”, the FBI reportedly believed it could be “domestic terrorism”.
But after Farook was identified, the Council for American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) requested not to reach any hasty deductions without a broader investigation on this bloody act.
It is known that, as a byproduct of the incident, many senior citizens were relocated to a Hospital of Loma University to be taken care of, their health status is not yet known.
As soon as the situation was made known, a police squad was set up around the place; in the inspection, the bomb squad located a suspicious package in the second floor of the building. Many moments of tension and uncertainty followed during the hours after the shooting.
President Barack Obama, when he heard about the incident, called for an increased control of firearms in the country. This massacre happened less than a week from the shooting in a reproductive services clinic in Colorado where 3 people died.
