Wednesday, December 23, 2015. Some extreme athletes were relaxed in hammocks in the Dolomites, suspended at more than 50 meters above the ground. The athletes walked on a tightrope, for then rest and relax in hammocks of bright colors on a ravine in the Munt Piana, in northern Italy.
Many of these athletes, who are trained to walk on the cables to high distances, they spent the night in the hammocks, before being accompanied by others in the morning.
The latest fashion among extreme sports is called “Highline”, the version with the highest risk of the “slackline”; a sport of balance in where is used a tape attached between two fixed points. The “slackline” began to be practiced in California in the 80s. Then it has evolved, spreading around the world.
There are six modes of “slackine”, since the one that is practiced in heights of more than 20 meters is the “Highline”. This mode consist in walking from a mountain to another on a rope of approximately 2,5 cm. It requires special equipment and expertise in security, in addition, the ability of balance and skill are qualities needed to exercise it.

This year the Dolomites was chosen as the perfect place for this extreme sport, both for their beauty and historical significance; where a hundred years ago, in times of war, 18,000 young Austrian and Italian soldiers died in the mountains; being visualized the seven kilometers of trenches. For this reason, many consider the concept of the rainbow of the hammocks, as a symbol of peace.
This has been demonstrated by the athletes, filled with patience and good humor; suspended in a void and without net, at hundreds of meters of height, participating in the International Highline Meeting Festival, carried out this year in the Mount Piana. So passionate of the heights!, that was not enough for them have fun during the day, but also they still hanging during the night sleeping in colorful hammocks.
The show in the Heights had a kitchen, a bar; and during the night they could attend to music sessions. The participants had other collateral activities for recreation, as tandem flight, with a two-seat glider or workshops of yoga.
So relaxed, entertained singing and dreaming, in a heavenly environment; that definitely practice “Highline”, seems to be an ideal sport for the weekend in pursuit of health and strengthening of the spirit. There is no doubt that the “slackline”, is an activity of the full balance between the body and the mind.
