The principles of Chinese astrology are based on a person’s year of birth, according to their calendar. Unlike the Gregorian calendar, the Chinese calendar is not governed by how many times the Earth goes around the Sun, but by the 12 cycles of the Moon instead.
Also known as the lunisolar calendar, the Chinese new year starts with the first day of new moon or full moon. Its origin dates back to 2637 BC, when the calendar consisting of five cycles was introduced, which lasts for 12 years, and each of them is governed by an animal. The animals include the rat, the bull, the tiger, the hare, the dragon, the snake, the horse, the sheep, the monkey, the rooster, the dog and the pig.
Another element that is part of Chinese astrology is the designation of five elements. In ancient times, Chinese astronomers characterized five planets these vital forces, because they found that their position in relation to the sun, the moon, and the comets influenced the destiny and the personality of each person.
Element Metal for Venus; element Wood for Jupiter; element Water – Air is for Mercury; element Fire for Mars and element Earth for Saturn.
Regarding the influence of each element over the signs, Chinese astrology considers that this happens because of the influence of each vital force in the conception of the Yin – Yang. Specialist Brun Hurber says that Chinese astrology is a method that has gained popularity in western societies, but is way more complex than western astrology. “Chinese astrology is a completely different concept of astrology. In fact, it should be classified as an oracle or a form of fortune telling, like many that existed in ancient cultures”.
Although western astrology is based on observing astronomical events, Chinese astrology is based on accumulated wisdom, which has nothing to do with western knowledge. Even so, Chinese astrology allows people to learn more about themselves, giving them the opportunity to know when to use their virtues and wait for better times.
