We have always heard about the so called precious stones. But what makes them “precious”? This type of mineral (also called Gems) is classified this way, because it has different characteristics to other types of stones. That is why they are widely used in the creation of jewelry. The following factors are considered:
- Rarity or difficulty of finding it: This feature adds value to the material, for its exclusivity.
- Hardness: this is determined by the Mohs scale (by its creator Friedrich Mohs), where from 1 to 10, the hardness of the stone is determined, i.e. its ability to be altered, deformed, or scratched when compared to another. The closer it is to 10 in the scale, the more resistant it is to change or deformation.
- The visual beauty: this is a determining factor for its classification. It is its visual impact, its color, the peculiarity of its shape, and its translucent or opaque composition.
Taking all these factors into account, there are more expensive stones than others: among the most expensive gemstones in the world are: Topaz, Zircon, Garnet, Aquamarine, Diamond, Ruby, Amber, Emerald, Jade, Lapis Lazuli, and Spinel.
This is certainly a different way of having goods of value, which usually rise with the passage of time. What about you? Which stone would you like to have?
