With an area of 270 kilometers, the Bay of Fundy is also known as the Bay of Fundy Ties, and it is a sea arm of the Canadian Atlantic coast. Geological studies determined that the Bay of Fundy originated when the earth’s crust sank more than 160 million years ago. Subsequently, the action of glaciers and erosion ended up molding its particular geography.

The origin of its name has different versions. The first comes from the sixteenth century, with the arrival of the Portuguese who were impressed by the peculiar landscape. A second version says that the name comes from a French expression, being named by the explorer Samuel de Champlain on his expedition in 1604.

Within the Bay of Fundy, a geography formed by islands can be found, with tributaries and tides of different sizes that have gained recognition worldwide. With a funnel-shape, the Bay of Fundy ends in the Strait of Chignecto and Minas Cove; this place has an irregular bottom and its deepest point is 150 meters deep.

In addition to the slopes that are more than 200 meters high, the area of the mouth can be enjoyed from a view with reefs and islets. Another particular feature of the Bay of Fundy is its salt marshes and ledges that reach five kilometers high and that are rich in red clay.

Every year, thousands of tourists, both Canadian and foreign, visit the Bay of Fundy. They are dazzled with the landscape, in addition to the various activities that can be performed in this tourist area. Kayaking and riding boats through its coves, or visiting its natural sculptures in sandstone caves, are some of the activities that tourists enjoy. The Bay of Fundy also has great fossil formations and volcanic mounds that are worth admiring.

According to geological records, twice a day, the sea fills and empties about 100 billion tons of water, forming the highest tides in the world; reaching 16 meters high in some areas, oscillating during a period of 12.4 hours and causing several ports to remain without a drop of water for hours.

In addition to scientific studies, the Bay of Fundy is perfect for ecotourism; it has a warm climate, in addition to the excellent local cuisine based on the marine living that offers fish, clams and lobsters.
