Being first-time parents or not, we all share the dream of having a baby. However, when talking about the child’s gender, it depends of each partner, this dream may vary depending on the inclination of parents. Parents tend to prefer that their firstborn will be a boy, by a sense of protection; while some mothers prefer girls. But what determines the sex of the baby?

Men determine the sex of the infant, although they don’t have control on it. They have two types of sperm chromosomes X or Y; while the woman produces two eggs with chromosome X. This results, in the union of egg and sperm, two combinations are involved: XX for girls and for boys XY; It is the natural proportion of this combination 50% for each sex.

However, these probabilities may change in favor of either sex, with the possibility that even we can choose whether to want a male or a female. There are natural methods for choosing the sex of the baby. Find out which they are:

Baretta Method: It was developed by Adriana Baretta an Argentine biochemistry and it has been tested on 120 women, yielding a 98% success. This involves practicing a progressive diet during the three months previous to the moment of conception, in which ovulation monitoring is performed to determine the most fertile periods. It states that for a boy, foods should be rich in calcium and magnesium, and low in sodium and potassium; and for girls the opposite.

Shettles Method: It was developed by Dr. Landrum Shettles in 1960 and has a 75% effective. In this, we consider the lifespan of sperm and the time of ovulation, so if you want to conceive a boy, sexual intercourse should take place two days after ovulation; in the case of girls it has to be two days earlier. This is explained by the fact that the Y sperms (boy) are weaker and die faster; while the X sperms (girls) are slower and stronger.

Chinese calendar method: Although this has no scientific validity, says that the success rate is 70%. It is based on a table prepared by the Chinese thousands of years ago, in which the baby’s sex is determined by the age of the mother and the date of the conception.

Even though, these are not all the methods that exist to choose the sex of a baby, today are the most used, and do not require spending large amounts of money. So you can try and even combine to increase the likelihood of success, and achieving this dream of having a boy or a girl.
