Scientists in the world have determined that the functioning of the human body is similar to a perfectly geared machine, each of its components is in a certain place for some reason. The best example is our fingernails and toenails, which are responsible for externally protecting our fingers.

Ideally, each person should look after their nails as well as their fingers and toes, but not everyone does. Due to stress and other factors, many women start biting their nails, a habit that can be harmful for the body.

This has become a habit for many people, and it can cause both aesthetic and oral alterations. Nail biting can be harmful to teeth, since nails are a hard protective layer by nature.

Different studies show that most nail biting is unconscious, as a cause of stress and anxiety. Scientifically, this habit is known as onychophagy, and it is developed by 50% of women between the ages of 10 and 18 years old.

The reasons why this happens are mostly related to stress and anxiety. Some women turn to this habit in order to escape from uncomfortable situations, believing that it will calm them down.

Boredom also leads to this habit; brain and physical inactivity causes the subconscious to activate an outlet to this condition. One cannot ignore the influences of emotions in any of these cases, because they play a fundamental role in how women react.

The first step to overcome onychophagia is to identify what is making you bite your nails. It is also necessary to determine which situations cause you to bite your nails, for example, if you are under too much pressure, if you’re anxious or if it’s just something that happens for no reason.

Then, you should constantly supervise yourself regarding this habit, so that your subconscious understands that what you are doing is not right, and that it can be changed.

You should also massage your fingertips, so that whenever you feel anxious and want to bite your nails, you can keep your hands busy, while your subconscious reacts positively to it and understands that you must not place your nails near your mouth.

There is no proven treatment for onychophagia, but the inner struggle to understand what is right and what is wrong with your body can be essential to eliminate this bad habit and have beautiful nails.
