Objects made of lapis lazuli were found in the tombs of UR, in Mesopotamia. It was a sacred stone to the Assyrians, who believed it attracted the light from heaven and the gods to earth. In Greece, it was considered the primary stone of Atlantis. In the Renaissance it was very popular as a base for paintings, frescoes and tables. It was also used as a pigment, by grinding and mixing it to make paintings. It is said that the famous Michelangelo used lapis lazuli for the blue tones of the Sistine Chapel. It was King Louis XIV of France’s favorite gem, and he used to give one piece of lapis lazuli to all the nobles and friends, as a sign of praise.
As for its healing properties, it can be said that it lowers blood pressure, so it should never be used by people who are hypotensive. It regulates thyroid functioning, and the endocrine system in general. It heals spleen conditions, and strengthens the neck and vocal cords. It is considered the stone of choice for depression and melancholy.
