In just three hours after leaving the Venezuelan coast, you can visit La Tortuga Island. No one lives there, its inhospitable atmosphere is maintained at the sight of hungry visitors seeking a quiet, pleasant and unforgettable place. It is an exceptional Caribbean destination.
The clear water, paradise sand and easy access are some of the tourist potential of this island which belongs to Venezuela. It is an excellent plan for a weekend. Its name is due to the fauna of turtles that live there. One way of getting around is with companies that leave from the Port of Buche in the town of Higuerote (Miranda state), located just 90 minutes from Caracas.
The tour operators offer transfers in boats with generous packages that include meals, tents and sleeping restrooms with fresh water. When you reach the island and have organized the camp on the edge of the beach without worrying about turning on the gas for cooking. The best option is to go with them. Most of them have more than 10 years working there, love the island, take care of it and they strive that you leave with a good memory.
During the trip, you can have fun watching some dolphins and flying fish that pursue the boat. Sometimes, the waves are strong; it is offshore; so the boat jumps with each wave and the ride can be less subtle than expected. However, upon arrival you will notice that everything was worth it. With only approach the island, she welcomes you. The blue sea water becomes turquoise and then towards the shore becomes clear. Walking through the field of 194 kilometers for 72 hours and see the sky and white clouds, has no waste. There is always sunshine and the sand is soft. Palm trees form shadows and the smell of fresh fish to fry in some camps captivates you.
Although there are no houses on the island, many fishermen regularly visit to stock up. It seems that one of them built what is known as Museo de Piedras; located on one side of the island. There are several unique stones mounted with different representations, forming a path that goes to the heart of the monument.
In the other corner, you get La Piscina; a small little lake with very comfortable warm water perfect for a group of people that want to have fun chatting pleasantly for a while or for those couples that are looking for a some alone time away from the travelers.
Also, it is good idea to walk in the fresh air of the nearby keys called Los Tortuguillos and Cayo Herradura. At times, luxury yachts arrive in the evening; giving the island an air of exclusivity, and even put loud music, around midnight the party is over. This is a place to relax!
