The world of jewelry is an unexplored world for many, of which only the tip of the iceberg is known, that is, what is seen in jewelery shops, in royalty and on fashion runways. But this world has grown and continues to grow around this art, so much so that there are international jewelry fairs annually such as Joya Barcelona, which is a private fair in which jewelry is mixed with art and painting.
The Joya Barcelona fair is an initiative that began in 2008, with 14 artists at Hotel 1898 in Las Ramblas, Spain, as a local event with Spanish artists that over the years became an international meeting point of creativity. Its director Paulo Ribeiro is a Brazilian architect who has lived in Spain for 15 years. He is responsible for organizing fairs in European cities such as Paris, Florence, Berlin and from Basel to Amsterdam.
This fair was created with the aim of showing the world what is known as current artistic jewelry, its new techniques, materials and perceptions of today’s jewelry. The process of experimentation makes this discipline a very personal work, in which each artist expresses and communicates through his pieces.
The type of jewelry present in this fair escapes completely from commercial jewelry, it does not reach high jewelry either, much less the world of crafts. This type of jewelry is called: artistic, that is to say, it points even to a different audience, because they are people who know how to appreciate the value of art over the commercial or of a precious gem. It could be classified as author’s jewelry, completely contrary to what is known.
Artistic jewelry is a discipline unknown to most people and that is not based on fashion, but on avant-garde ideas and concepts. The tenth edition was held on 4, 5 and 6 October 2018, at the Disseny HUB Barcelona. For this individual calls, to galleries, to collectives and to national and international schools are made.
Finally, each edition has a different concept, in the 2016 edition this art was combined with painting, giving the different participating jewelers as inspiration the paintings of the well-known Spanish artist Ramón Casas, which was art in its maximum expression. Definitely a fair that is worth visiting if you are an art and jewelry lover.
