Traveling does not only involve reservations, packing and getting on the plane. It’s a rigorous process that requires much preparation due to all the details it includes. Especially, if you are traveling for the first time to a country you have never visited before. In this case, there are many details that must not be ignored, since by omitting these could result in troubles and headaches. That is why, when traveling abroad you must not forget to consider the following:
Consult other travelers and do proper research
Make a preliminary investigation of the country you are visiting based on other travelers experience. For example: which visa or documentation they require, if you´ll need any additional requirements for entry and stay, road rules, pet accommodation options, weather, culture, traditions and customs, health conditions, best traveling season, foreign exchange and local currency, phone numbers and legislation. Why legislation? Because some countries consider some substances illegal and could easily incur a crime.
Documentation requirements
Prepare all documents you will need for your trip. These include: national identity card, visas, passport, documents proving paternity or parentage (If traveling with children), international driving license, international certificate of vaccination, letter invitation and health card (Mostly for countries within the European Union), sanitary authorization to travel with pets. Also, remember to purchase a health and travel insurance to cover any unforeseen scenarios regarding health, thefts and losses or missed flights.
Medical issues
Think about your health and of those traveling with you. Depending on where you go, some vaccines will be necessary. Also, take your own medicines with you if you suffer from any chronic disease, with its respective prescription.
Money, money, money
Remember to bring enough money in case of unforeseen situations. Credit cards and cash will be your ally when you buying souvenirs or when need to pay for transportation to any destination within the country; also, for food and lodging at the hotel of your choice.
Keep in touch daily
Always stay in touch with your family members and friends. Likewise, give them address and telephone numbers of places you stay. Also, note of where embassies and consulates of your home country are located at destination, as well as their numbers in case you ever need assistance.
Smart packing
Prepare your luggage with time. If taking a camera remember to bring the correct adapter for the country. Choose clothes according to the days you will stay. Also, consider weather and respect their customs and traditions of your host. Don’t forget airlines weight regulations and making sure you don’t leave anything essential behind. In addition, make sure to identify your luggage with a color label so it’s easier to spot.
If you take note of every detail, traveling aboard will be a marvelous experience. It does not need to be traumatic, try to anticipate all risk scenarios. Take your time and remember to organize and reach in advance.
