According to the sources, a 17-month-old boy was playing in his backyard when he found a poisonous snake. He began playing with it and biting it until he killed the snake. This happened at the boy´s house in Mostardas, a coastal city in Brazil’s Rio Grande do Sul state. Here, snakes are rarely seen since most of the floor is made of cement and there is much traffic. Jaine Ferreira, the boy´s mother, explained that what caught her attention was how quit the boy was; that´s when she decided to go check on him. To her surprise, she found Lorenzo holding the snake in his mouth still moving and trying to get free from the boy´s jaw.

Afraid the snake might have bit him; she rushed Lorenzo to the Mostardas Hospital immediately. Fortunately, the doctors found no signs of any snake bites, injuries or symptoms of poisoning. They took photographs of the snake and send them to a research center so that it could be properly identified, since they suspected it could be a kind of Bothrops, also known as jararaca or yararacá, which is an Amazonian viper and one of the most venomous snakes in America.

Initially, the boy did not want to let go of the snake, thinking it was a toy. But with his mother´s insisting on him to let go, he eventually did. What saved Lorenzo´s life was that the bit the snake on its head, which helped him it from being bitten. Later, the snake was identified by the Museum of Natural Sciences of the Zoo-Botanic Foundation of Rio Grande do Sul as a Erythrolamprus poecilogyrus, a none venomous snake.

Bothrops snakes are a type of venomous subfamily snakes which has 45 species distributed from northeastern Mexico, Central America, including the Antilles and most of South America. Their size varies from 50-70 cm. Most are characterized by a sharp snout. These snakes are responsible for more deaths in America than any other venomous snakes. Without proper medical treatment the mortality rate is high.
