Since ancient times, bread has held a special position in cuisine as an indispensable side dish in many homes around the world. Over time, people have chosen to believe that bread makes us fat, and we should not eat bread while on a diet. However, we have listed the benefits of bread for your health below.
The Nutrition and Bromatology Department of the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Barcelona, Spain, conducted a study that shows that people who eat bread regularly have lower levels of bad cholesterol and higher levels of good cholesterol, leading to a better cardiovascular health.
According to the Mediterranean diet, a very complete diet, bread should be eaten daily. The World Health Organization considers that the average ideal intake is 250 grams of bread per day. In fact, bread itself is not the problem; you need to consider what you put inside the bread. Nutritionist Natalia Arévalo says that “We should not stop eating bread, but we should be very careful about what we put inside of it. Choose something that low in fat, such as turkey breast, eggs (not fried eggs, though), ricotta or cottage cheese, light jam or cream cheese. Say no to butter, fatty cheese, mortadella and spreads.
She also says that “We should never eat bread along with our meals, because that would only increase the calories of our main meals”. “Healthy bread should have fiber in it, for example: whole wheat bread, whole grain bread, and whole wheat pita bread.
The most popular types of bread are: whole wheat bread, which is high in fiber and can prevent heart diseases, constipation and hemorrhoids, decrease the levels of sugar in the blood, and make us feel fuller, which is great when we’re on a diet; rye bread, which is healthy and full of iron and vitamin B; and oatmeal bread, which helps reduce the risk of cholesterol and favors the digestion.
Another general benefit of eating bread is the energy we get to perform our daily tasks. Its high levels of carbohydrates are helpful for people who practice sports, giving them the necessary energy to train.
Remember that excess of everything is bad. You must eat the right amount of food for you every day, keep a balanced diet and remember that it is not good to eat bread along with other carbohydrates.
