Same as our face, the skin on the back also has sebaceous glands. These glands excrete sebum. When sebum accumulates along with bacteria and dead cells, it causes inflamed pores and outbreaks.

The severity of this acne can vary. A mild acne outbreak produces few blemishes and may include whiteheads, blackheads and pimples. Meanwhile, a severe acne outbreak results in more blemishes and cysts.

Tips for back acne prevention

  • Shower immediately after an intense workout: sweat and dirt accumulated after exercise can settle in your pores, which can aggravate acne.
  • Exfoliate regularly: use a gentle, non-comedogenic exfoliant with salicylic acid. It helps remove excess oil and dead skin cells from pores.
  • The ultraviolet rays of the sun can darken acne and cause acne scars. Therefore, avoid sun exposure while you have acne on your back.
  • Apply oil-free sunscreen every day: sunscreen helps repair damaged skin and absorbs excess oil from pores.
  • Choose non-comedogenic skin care products.
  • Keep your hair out of your back.
  • Wear tight clothes that do not irritate your skin. Tight clothing can push oil and bacteria deeper into pores.
  • Clean gym clothes and towels regularly.
