Dom Pedro the world’s largest aquamarine is called. This piece is of a majestic blue variety of beryl, is named after two great emperors called Pedro I and Pedro II of Brazil; country where it was taken in the late 80’s, found specifically in Minas Gerais (Brazil) and it was thanks to the hard work of three miners who with great effort managed to extract the beautiful crystal; however, when they found the piece, this accidentally fell and fractured into three pieces; selecting the two that most stand out for its beautiful color and brightness to be carved and cut.
It is said that the row piece measured approximately 60 cm and weighing at least about 20kg, at the moment of carving it this gem radiated a clarity and beauty that was worth admiring so the jewelry expert Bernd Munsteiner, took his time staring at it and then dedicate it long hours so he can shape it to the obelisk form that currently has.
For detailing this gem slightly more, was worked in Germany; it weighs about 4.6 pounds and measures about 35 cm long and 10 cm wide, in it you can see a species of thick needles. What makes us get lost in it is its radiant blue turquoise, which is given by the effect of sunlight on contact with small amounts of iron in its interior; its color transmits a sensation of peace and harmony with the environment.
The aquamarine gem was also formerly known as the stone of the sailor, for this reason it is said that many sailors used it as a talisman when they were in their boats to protect them from any storm. This impressive specimen was acquired by at least seven to 10 million, but has not been able to find out the exact amount, was donated by a couple of collectors from Florida to the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, where it is exposed today.
The most captivating of the Dom Pedro gem, is the fact of being unique in its style, there is no raw to sculpt one as big or to be able cut or copy a piece about the size of the aquamarine; making it an extraordinary and unique glass and regarded as the Picasso of the gems. We bring two qualities we have, we sometimes forget: as human beings we unique and unmatched but we sometimes forget: as human beings we are unique and unmatched.
