In various areas there are holes on Earth that exist naturally, that may have been created by the activity of the earth’s crust or asteroids that fell from outer space, but there are also others that have been dug by men in their insatiable quest for mineral wealth.

In the last ice age a limestone cave was formed in front of the beaches of Belize, it is called The Great Blue Hole and it is a submarine sinkhole, important not only for the practice of extreme sports but scientifically, it has witnessed the change in habitat for nearly a thousand years. At that time, the hole was dry and it was been filled with water so slowly that it preserved the fossils inside it, such as turtles, crocodiles, birds, plants that still have their chlorophyll despite the time and human remains since 1500 years ago.

The newest and most mysterious holes appeared in distant Siberia. After discovering the first one, which has a lake inside it, there were two smaller ones just as enigmatic as the first. Apparently they appeared due to an underground collapse by the melting permafrost, a type of permanent frozen soil of the Siberian tundra. There are many versions about it.

In Yellowstone there were explosions and telluric phenomena, the last one was about 642,000 years ago. The lava under the Earth’s crust broke out, which resulted in thousands of cubic kilometers of rocks and the magmatic chamber sank, forming a hole that has been a kind of boiler, a very visited site in the park. After this there were other minor and multiple eruptions that filled part of this boiler, but you can notice the steep edges. Volcanism is still very active in Yellowstone, where there are hot springs and about 300 geysers, proving the strength of underground activities.

It is believed that 2,500 wells were originated from 1970 until today in the Dead Sea and about a thousand of them in the last 15 years; due to drainage. The fresh water that goes in it, quickly dissolves much of the salt that is concentrated in the area around the lake, this causes the weakening and collapse of the land surface on the shores of this closed sea, creating more holes around.
