Two family members of Venezuela´s first lady, Cilia Flores, wife of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro, were arrested for drug trafficking at Port of Prince, Haiti, in a collaborative antidrug operation held by the Haitian government and the US Drug Enforcement Agency. Efraín Antonio Campos Flores and Francisco Flores Freitas, nephews of the Venezuelan first lady, were caught trying to smuggle 800 kilos of cocaine.
The presidential couple saw as their own son Efrain, and at the moment of his arrest, while he was negotiating with the undercover agents, he identified himself as their son.
The two young were being recorded since they were in Central America trying to negotiate where the merchandise would go. In the recordings you can see as the two men show the undercover agents the quality and purity of their product.
This is not the first time the Venezuelan government has been involved in drug trafficking. There is much suspect and some evidence that show that this government is involved in money laundering and various drug trafficking operations. US authorities have begun a strict search of all Venezuelan representatives to expose all those who operate within this cartel.
They believe that Venezuela is the bridge for transporting drugs to South American and Caribbean countries. Arrest made by police in Washington, Miami and Nueva York was later related with Venezuelan government executives and leaders of the Venezuelan state oil company Petróleos de Venezuela. The US government assured that tons of cocaine and other drugs pass through Venezuela and then reach Europe and the US.
At the moment, there has been no word from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Venezuela, or any other institution relating to the drug arrest.
Cilia Flores does not only serve as Frist Lady of the Venezuelan Republic, she is also a candidate for deputy of the Socialist United Party of Venezuela, elections which will be held in December of this year. As it is expected, having family members arrested and involved in global drug trafficking will with a doubt affect her candidacy
