An idyllic landscape surrounded by mountains and forest, a clear water lake and a small-scale territory are the perfect charms to make a postcard of a dream paradise called Hallstatt. It is located at the edge of the Hallstatt lake, in Salzkammergut state from Austria.
Hallstatt is a small town with great history listed by UNESCO as a world heritage site since 1997. Its name comes from the Celtic word hall that means salt, one of the most commercial valuables treasures since 2,500 years ago. Salt was considered the white gold from this town not only because of the large quantities of it in mines but also for its important legacy.
Even though is a small town, it is a nice place to walk around due to its beauty and picturesque landscapes. The beautiful houses make you want to walk thru its winding streets, leaving you astonished by its spectacular surroundings. The most important square is called “Markplatz”. It is a wonderful place to stop and appreciate the fountain surrounded by beautiful fronts cover with vines.
The parochial church deserves special attention. It dates from the XV century. It has an enormous tower in crown shape where you can admire town and the Karner Keinhaus or bone house next to the church. You can admire 600 colored skulls and more than 1200 human bones in the bone house.
When walking thru the town you will find more than the church or bone house. It has wonderful mountains and caves in which you can observe the beauty of the flora and fauna. It also has an amazing landscape with a lake packed with fishes, the glacier garden of Hallstatt and the waterfalls of Waldbachstub.
Hallstatt has many touristic attractions that one can’t go without visiting them. One of those is the ancient salt mine, called Salzbergwerk. This is considered the most ancient mine from the world and one of the fortune fountains of Hallstatt, besides its historical legacy with objects that you can observe at the prehistoric museum, called Kultuerebe Hallstatt. If you are looking for more activities we recommend you a romantic boat trip in the lake under the moonlight or outdoors activities like hiking and paragliding if you rather.
Hallstatt is such a beautiful place that in Guangdong, China the mining company Minmetals Land started the replica of this town in 2011. Some people from the town including the mayor reject the idea of making a replica because the company started to do it without asking for previous authorization. They change their mind in 2012, after a cooperation agreement that promote the tourism among these two towns was signed.
There are many attractive towns to visit, but if you really want to live a heavenly experience you must visit Hallstatt, the most beautiful town at the lake’s edge.
