The creativity in human being is manifested in different ways, and jewelry is one of them. Every day we can see the changes and innovations in the use of different incredible materials to make beautiful jewels. But, not even some of the most creative people imagine that one day we could have jewels made with smog. Every city in the world has smog, some more than others but they all do. Smog is a threat to the health of every habitant in the world and the most pessimist people could thing that this will never change. Industrialization and the amount of cars in the cities are the principal cause of smog growth around the world.
Faced with such panorama, the Dutch designer Daan Rosegaard with his team work of professional engineers and inventors seem to have the solution to smog problem; the Smog Free Project. It is a mission where the ideal is not only to purify the environment but also to make jewels using the smog particles.
With this purpose they have made the Smog Free Tower, this is a gigantic structure of 7 meters high and 3,5 meters wide. This tower is capable to filter the air based on the ions technology. According to Rosegaard this tower can filter 30.000 cubic meters of air every hour. During the process the tower uses the same amount of electricity than a kettle, besides, it works with removable energy.
As well, the tower has an additional function. The smog particles trapped in the interior are compressed at high pressure creating resin cubes of eight millimeters on each side. Each cube stores 1.000 cubic meters of smog particles. After that, each cube is made into high quality jewels. For the moment the jewels are rings or cufflinks. The idea of these jewels is to create a project in which the important thing is not only to trade and sell jewels but to make conscience about the importance of taking care of the environment so we can breathe pure air.
Even though the project Smog Free Tower received funding from the Dutch government to build the first tower, it was necessary to make a crowdfunding campaign with the support of Kickstarter. With this campaign in less than two months it grossed 113.153 euros thanks to the sponsorship of more than 1.577 companies. These companies will have both, the satisfaction of helping the planet and a ring or cufflinks like a present. Even if the first tower was settled in Rotterdam, the aim is to move the Smog Free Project all around the world, visiting cities like Bombay, Pekin, Mexico City and Paris.
After knowing the origin of this jewelry perhaps you might also want to wear one as a symbol of your commitment with the environment. ¿Will you join the cause?
