Whether you are a novice or expert traveller, if you travel by plane frequently, you may have been making several mistakes mainly associated with what you wear. Of course, this category fits accessories, clothing or shoes, which may not be the most appropriate for the occasion since they can make safety or the flight itself miserable.
While there are no specific restrictions on what to wear or not when travelling by plane, the truth is that we all love to look good. But if while travelling by plane you want to be comfortable and look elegant without sacrificing your style, you may want to know what those things are that you should definitely not wear when doing it. So we bring you a list that you will find quite interesting.
Bulky jewellery or accessories
Although not prohibited, metal jewellery and especially hard-to-remove jewellery can slow you down as you go through airport security. Likewise, any jewel in the shape of a potential weapon also generates warning signals. But it is not the only thing, since the nails of high heels could also trigger metal detectors, although the same goes for shoes that have large ornaments or metal studs.
To avoid these types of uncomfortable situations and delays, it is best to remove all jewellery, although an exception may be a simple, removable bracelet that you can check in with your luggage or put in your carry-on bag.
Any tight clothing
While travelling by plane, skirts, blouses, tight shirts and any type of tight clothing are a big no-no. This is because our bodies naturally swell when we fly; but also this type of clothing does not allow us much freedom of movement. This could interfere with proper circulation and contribute to the creation of blood clots in our legs, generating what is known as deep vein thrombosis.
What you should wear instead is any clothing with an elastic waist; for example, stylish leggings or sweatshirts could add comfort without sacrificing your style.
Uncomfortable bras
Definitely one of the main things not to wear when travelling by plane is an uncomfortable bra. Keep in mind that if the bra you wear digs into your shoulders and puts a little pressure on your chest, it will become even more uncomfortable in the air. Therefore, a seamless sports bra is recommended, but also without wires or hooks to avoid any discomfort.
A little clothing
If you like to wear light clothing, you may want to reconsider if you are travelling by plane, since the temperature before and after take-off is one thing, so you could be frozen in the air-conditioned cabin. The worst of the case is that depending on the trip, you will feel very uncomfortable and with nowhere to go for a short or long time.
An additional concern with revealing outerwear is that in some countries and cultures it is considered offensive. But we also cannot forget that in case of a possible emergency, it will be better to be covered. One tip to keep in mind is wearing several layers, which you can keep in your carry-on luggage and wear when the temperature starts to drop.
Fragrance
Although we all love to wear perfumes, many people can be sensitive to certain fragrances which could lead to allergies and asthma in some cases, so our favourite perfume could become torture for our flight companions. This is because shared air can exacerbate exposure to these odours, therefore, it is recommended here being respectful with other passengers and leaving our favourite perfume to apply after we have disembarked. However, you can rely on your deodorant to keep smelling good.
High heels, flip flops and slides
Choosing the right shoes for flying could be a difficult task especially for women. However, among the options to consider, you should know that high heels can slow you down and in case of an evacuation, they could also tear the slide.
Flip-flops and slides aren’t the best option either, as you might have to do without them in an emergency, although they could also make your life difficult in case that you have to rush to board your flight. To this, we must add that they leave the feet exposed to many germs that can be found in airports, which makes them definitely the worst kind of shoes for the occasion.
The standard recommendation is that you opt for shoes with laces that can be tightened and loosened depending on the circumstances.
Fabrics that do not breathe
Synthetic fibres such as nylon and polyester should definitely not be used when travelling by plane. And not only for comfort, but also as a protection measure since they are fabrics that do not allow air circulation and are extremely flammable, something that could be life threatening, especially in case of plane accidents and possible fires.
Instead of using these types of fabrics, you can opt for others such as cotton, silk, wool or linen, which are known to allow air and moisture to pass through. On the other hand, you might also consider artificial, moisture-wicking fabrics as an equally smart option.
Bulky jackets
Oversized coats are on our list too. The reason is that they are uncomfortable, and it can also be difficult to put them in our carry-on luggage or in the section above our seat. With this in mind, it is advisable to wear an all-weather jacket filled with down instead. It will be warm enough for winter and will also work perfectly for cool fall weather or breezy summer nights.
