Honduras has a population of more than 8.5 million inhabitants; it is an excellent site to do what is called “archeological tourism”. If you are a lover of the Mayan culture, this is the ideal space for you. Although the vast majority of the aboriginal population was concentrated in the areas of Mexico and Guatemala, Honduras there was also an important indigenous presence, especially in the very well-known town of Copan, located to the west of the country.

The Copán Park, declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1980, is an archaeological site very close to the border with Guatemala, according to historians to the place was given the name of “Oxwitik”. The ancient indigenous wanted to nurture the nature in their own way through the art, they built pyramids that looked like mountains. They carved Impressive squares in form of lakes, which they called “portals”, and that were very similar to the caves; and everything built they called “forest of kings”.

One of the legacies left behind by the Mayas in Honduras was their love for the jade. That beautiful green gem that they called “stone of heaven”, they used it in different ways, from jewelry until weapons, well they said that would give them the victory at the time of the war. For them the jade was more valuable than gold. In fact, today still has more importance. The price of this rock is higher than the pieces made of gold.

In addition to the Mayan heritage, what else can we find in Honduras? As for the smaller of the house they can visit the Children Ecological Park San Ignacio, a place where the whole family can pass a pleasant time. It has several swimming pools and water slides in the middle of a majestic vegetation. If you like the fishing you have the possibility to rent the equipment that you need to practice and try your luck at the river, while you’re admired by a herd of monkeys that live around one of the lagoons near the place. The park has a zoo with endangered species and other creatures not native to Honduras.

You will find tourist packages in La Ceiba (a city located a few kilometers from the Caribbean sea) or from Sambo Creek; although you can also go straight to the location and hire a local angler who gladly will serve you as a tour guide and transport.
