Often it is talked about five neutral colours, which are black, white, grey, navy blue, and beige, and they owe their name to the fact that they can go with each other and with a wide range of colours and patterns to achieve a harmonious image in the style you want to wear.
To look elegant and stylish, it is recommended to put together a maximum of three colours, besides that the third colour must be minimal or “accent”, that is, that it is present in the accessories of the set such as bags, scarves, belts, shoes, watches, ties, socks, etc.
It should be borne in mind that neutral colours are characterized by two basic things: first, for their discretion, and second because they are practically combinable with all colours, but with few exceptions.
If we talk about the outfits to wear to work, we must clarify that the perfect combinations must have between 50 to 70% neutral colours, especially that they are present in blazers, jackets, suits, skirts, dresses or pants, while the rest could be in another neutral colour, an accent colour, which could be striking. There are classic combinations with these colours, which we will explain below:
Black: It can be said that black is the king of neutral colours; it can be worn all year round and although it is present in the wardrobe of almost all women and men, it is not recommended wearing it in spring. Black projects power, authority, and leadership, and it is a symbol of elegance and sophistication. The neutral colours that go with it perfectly are grey, white, and less frequently, beige.
In the spring season, exceptions could be made and put it together with light and intense colours such as pink, sky blue, lilac, white, salmon, turquoise blue and emerald green to give a touch of freshness to the style; and although it is not common to wear it at this time, it is the most worn at workplace throughout the year.
White: It is the faithful companion of black and is generally the neutral colour that is sometimes underestimated, although it goes very well with many outfits, for example, in blazers or sport jackets, moccasin shoes, sandals or semi-open sneakers, white dress shirts with stripes in another colour, cotton or linen pants, skirts, dresses made of soft and thin fabrics and white tops, as well as bags, necklaces, earrings, watches, belts, among others that can go perfectly with other navy blue, grey and beige garments.
Without a doubt, white is one of the neutral colours that make women look cooler and more reliable, and it is recommended putting it together with accent colours, such as red, royal blue, orange, purple, yellow, fuchsia, turquoise, grass green and deep sky blue, especially in the spring season.
Navy blue: It is the most recommended colour in suits and dress pants, especially in fabrics such as linen, cotton and thin wool, and it must be worn during the day to replace black. If it is the spring time, this colour projects authority at work, and it is recommended putting it together with light colours; but the neutral colours that go with navy blue perfectly are beige, grey, white and lilac.
Grey: By presenting various shades that can be put together perfectly, it becomes the noblest neutral colour, in addition to the fact that light grey communicates confidence and dark grey reflects authority, but on a less marked level than black. It usually looks great in blazers, jackets, suits, and pants. Also, the blouses and tops in light tones are very cool. The neutral colours that go with grey perfectly are black, white and navy blue.
For work in the spring season, the different shades of grey can be put together with light colours such as sky blue, lilac, white, and even yellow to give it a cooler and warmer touch; for example, by wearing grey pants with a white blouse and adding yellow accessories. For men, grey colour can be added to loafers, and put them together with white pants and a light yellow shirt.
Although there are other colours that can be recommended such as turquoise blue, orange, salmon and emerald green which give more dynamism and joy to the outfit in a season characterized by the diversity of colour in the environment.
Beige: It is one of the least neutral colours taken into account when making combinations in sets, but it is very practical and combinable, in addition to the fact that it projects confidence and warmth, being recommended its use in skirts or pants, and making perfect combinations with white and navy blue. So do not leave beige out of your combinations; dare to put your pants and skirts together with blouses or flannels in salmon, lilac, light pink, white, orange, emerald green, among others.
